AIMH HI works to strengthen the emotional health of Hawaiʻi’s youngest keiki by supporting the professionals, relationships, and systems that surround them. Through training, consultation, public education, and advocacy, the organization promotes healthy early relationships from birth through age five.
AIMH HI focuses on the mental and emotional health of Hawaiʻi’s youngest children by strengthening the people and systems around them. Rather than primarily providing direct therapy to children, the organization helps professionals who work with infants, young children, and families develop the knowledge and skills to support healthy early relationships.
Its work includes professional training and learning communities, mental health consultation for early-childhood professionals, an endorsement system for practitioners, a statewide clinician directory, public education, and advocacy. Through the Promising Minds Fellows Program, AIMH HI has mentored more than 50 professionals since 2020, helping expand the infant and early childhood mental health workforce across different settings and communities.
The organization's approach is grounded in the idea that the relationships surrounding a young child are an important part of their emotional development—and that supporting those relationships requires the adults and systems around them to be supported too.
What Makes This Work Interesting
AIMH HI’s work starts with an idea that can be easy to overlook: supporting a baby’s mental health often means supporting the adults around that baby. Instead of concentrating only on what happens when a young child needs treatment, AIMH HI works with the people who care for and work with children every day—helping them understand early relationships, reflect on their own work, and build skills they can carry into childcare, healthcare, home visiting, education, and other settings.
