Family Promise of Hawaiʻi
Family Promise of Hawaiʻi helps families with children prevent or overcome homelessness through emergency shelter, rental assistance, case management, and housing support. Its family-centered approach focuses on helping families move into stable housing while keeping them together and connected to their community.
Family Promise of Hawaiʻi helps families with children who are experiencing homelessness or are at risk of losing their housing. Its programs range from homelessness prevention and emergency rental assistance to short-term shelter, rapid rehousing, and ongoing case management.
At its ʻOhana Navigation Centers on Oʻahu, families can stay in their own room while working with case managers to identify a path back to permanent housing. The organization also provides rental assistance and other housing support, along with practical help navigating employment, finances, public benefits, and other challenges that can affect housing stability.
The approach is intentionally family-centered: parents and children remain together while the organization works toward a permanent housing solution. Community volunteers add another layer of support through meals, tutoring, children's activities, and skill-building workshops.
What Makes This Work Interesting
Family Promise is trying to change what the shelter experience looks like for families. At its ʻOhana Navigation Centers, families have their own rooms rather than sleeping in a large congregate space, while housing navigation, case management, and other support happen alongside the shelter itself. The goal is not simply to provide a place to stay, but to make the shelter a temporary step on the way to permanent housing.
